Beat the Heat, Chill Your Nerves, Refresh Your Spirit with this stress-busting Lavender Lemonade. Nothing beats the summer heat like a tall, icy glass of lemonade and nothing refreshes a frazzled nervous system like the chill energy of lovely lavender. Making fragrant and friendly lavender lemonade is a beautiful way to infuse herbs into everyday recipes, bringing a botanical boost to a summertime staple and introducing herbal medicine into your life in the most delicious way.
Lavender lemonade is a cinch to make with either fresh or dried lavender (fresh is especially preferred, so you’re in for a treat if you grow lavender in your garden). Lavender has a cooling, relaxing, and rejuvenating effect on the body, making it an excellent choice for reducing stress, combating inflammation, and bringing a sense of normalcy to the nerves. Both weekday afternoons and celebratory brunches are all the more special with the addition of a medicinal beverage like this juicy thirst-quencher for the senses.
Lavender is the goldilocks of calmative herbs. It’s “just right”: a relaxant without being too sedating and gentle for children and elders of all ages. It’s particularly fantastic for those who experience stress that manifests in the digestive system, and lavender-infused drinks can be excellent for tummy troubles.
Fair warning – serving Lavender Lemonade at your next hot-weather gathering guarantees a future request to bring botanical beverages. Keep calm and put an herb in it. See below for how to make stress-busting lavender lemonade.
Lavender Lemonade Simple Syrup
- 2 heaping tbsp roughly chopped fresh lavender flowers, leaves, and stalks (or 1 ½ heaping tbsp dried)
- Zest from ½ organic lemon, cut into thin strips or grated
- ¼ to ½ cup local raw honey, depending on desired sweetness
- ½ cup water
Add lavender and lemon peel to a small saucepan. Add honey and ½ cup water and bring just to a simmer until you have dissolved the honey. Do not boil. Turn the heat off, put on the lid, and let this mixture steep for about an hour or until cooled completely. Then strain, squeezing the herbs and lemon so that all the liquid is released from the pulp. This juice is your simple syrup for your recipe.
