Our extensive collection of naturally derived ingredients for soothing sensitive skin and reducing redness and inflammation grows each year, as we discover how to harness the inherent capabilities of certain plants for preventing irritation and protecting the skin’s natural moisture barrier. The demand for these ingredients rises with the increased awareness of allergies and skin sensitivities.
“Clinical studies on oats show significant healing effects for dry and itchy skin.”
Oats are a known skin soother, but newer, more target-specific options include beta-glucan and oat kernel oil which are uniquely found in oat grains. Each of these ingredients is antioxidant-rich and powerfully anti-irritant. In a 2005 study, published in the “International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists”* magazine, Dr. Pillai and his research team performed a series of experiments on skin to assess the penetrability of oat beta-glucan. The results showed that not only did the beta-glucan penetrate the epidermis, it also reached the dermis. Although, on the surface, the results sound promising, they are ambiguous as Pillai’s skin section had been frozen then treated with gamma radiation.
“Sunshine Botanicals products use the natural properties of oat kernel oil and beta-glucan to soothe dry, itchy skin.”
In a separate study, Dr. Pillai treated 27 human subjects with 0.1 percent topical beta glucan or a placebo for eight weeks. After the trial period was over, the subjects treated with beta-glucan showed improved skin smoothness and fewer wrinkles compared to the subjects treated with a placebo.
